Is Phantom of the Opera appropriate for kids?

It’s a little crazy that this was the first time seeing Phantom of the Opera after living in New Jersey for nine years, and seeing multiple Broadway shows per year. I figured that since it has been on Broadway for 30 years, it would be here for a while longer (we’d get around to seeing it), and other shows are coming and going. Plus, after 30 years, wouldn’t it be dated? But my kids have been asking me to go for a few years, and the stars finally aligned between our schedule and ticket prices (thank you TDF membership).

Grammy Museum: Dads Visit Free Today

It’s going to be a gorgeous day today, but if you’re looking to escape the heat for a few hours, the newly opened Grammy Museum Experience at the Prudential Center in Newark is honoring fathers by letting them in free today (with purchase of a full price ticket).

The Grammy Museum Experience is an 8,200 foot interactive museum with exhibits including: New Jersey Legends, Max Weinberg Drum Interactive, Wyclef Jean Rap Interactive and The Taylor Swift ExperienceTM.

Tickets: $10/adult, $7/kid, $8/senior at Tickemaster (plus fees) or at the Prudential Center

Where: Prudential Center, Newark

When: Open today from 11-6.

Review: Radio City Music Hall Tour

It’s okay. You can be a local and still take the Radio City Music Hall tour. In fact, you should. Your kids would like it too. There are details for those who care greatly about architecture, art and design. And it’s fun to wander around back stage and see Rockettes’ costumes up close (and meet a Rockette in person). And if you’re lucky like us, you’ll show up on one of the 40 or so days a year when there’s not a performance and they aren’t setting up for one. And you’ll be able to on STAGE.  Yeah, we got lucky.

This bean-to-bar factory has tastings, tours (on-site and international), classes and dining. Stop in and get some chocolate bar samples from their single origin bars. *This is part of our series this week on San Francisco.* I’ve been wanting to try Smitten Ice Cream in San Francisco for a long time and am glad I finally did, on a recent trip to the city. We went to the flagship location in Hayes Valley, which looks a bit like a pop up store. It’s quite charming. Review: KitTea Cat Cafe in San Francisco

*This is part of our series this week on San Francisco.*  We’ve been to two cat cafés, so we wanted to try KitTea Cat Café in San Francisco. I learned not to go late afternoon like we did – the cats are tired and don’t feel like playing. So it was disappointing. Even my son, who begs me to visit other cat cafes, got bored 20 minutes in and asked how much longer we were staying. Given that we paid $20/person for the hour, I was disappointed. It was crowded with people and the cats ignored us. No cats wanted to play!

A day in Japantown San Francisco

*This is part of our series this week on San Francisco.*  Japantown San Francisco is one of my favorite places. And my teen son loves it too, so when we were spending our spring break in San Francisco, that was first on his list to see. Japantown is basically the Japantown Center, an indoor mall, though there are some stores outside there as well.

San Francisco CityPASS Review

This is part of our series this week on San Francisco.

When we visited San Francisco recently, we were given a San Francisco CityPASS for review purposes. We already planned on seeing many of the places covered by the CityPASS, so it seemed like a good idea – was it? We discuss that at the end. Here’s what we saw.

Exploratorium

The Exploratorium is a world famous hands-on kids’ science museum for a good reason – it’s a great place. It’s huge. You won’t make it through in one visit, but you can still spend a few hours there. Since we were there a few years ago, they’ve added on more outside exhibits, some indoor ones and rebuilt the Tactile Dome (one of my favorite things from it’s old location at the Palace of Fine Arts).
