While staying at the Kimpton Era hotel on 48th Street, I wandered by FDNY Fire Zone (also on 48th Street) – which I had never seen before. But it’s been there since 2020 or 2021 It’s a fire safety learning center, and it is fabulous for kids. And it’s free.

Firefighters (or retired firefighters – I’m not sure) are on duty in this hands-on experience. Kids can go into a cab of a fire truck, in the back of the truck, try on gear, see how it works at a fire station, and more.

While free to visit, they do charge for the fire safety presentation (currently $7/kid, $8/adult). We did not see it while we were there. I assume the presentation is what they describe below:
Per the website: At the heart of the Fire Zone experience is the innovative fire simulator that utilizes special effects and multimedia to help teach visitors about fire safety and what to do in case of a fire emergency. A firefighter and facilitator guide visitors through the interactive presentation. Visitors leave the Fire Zone with materials necessary to eliminate fire hazards in their own homes and to create escape plans for their families.

They also have a section (not pictured) with small firetrucks (collectible types).

While the equipment is attached to the wall, it’s easy to see and feel the gear – and get a sense of the size.

Per the website: The FDNY Fire Zone is New York City’s state-of-the-art fire-safety learning center. At the Fire Zone, you can climb on a realistic fire truck, try on bunker gear, meet a firefighter, and learn how to crawl through a smoke-filled hallway.

The code information is in the back of the firetruck. We did not press it to hear, but I’m sure it would be fun for kids and educational too.

They have a great store as well, benefitting the FDNY Foundation. Lots of things to choose from.

They have tons of patches from different parts of the country to view, and some to purchase.
