The NYC holiday windows are up, and here’s what you can expect to see. This post has 2023 NYC holiday windows: Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue, and you’ll find the Bergdorf Goodman and Bloomingdale’s windows in another post.
2023 NYC holiday windows: Macy’s
The theme for the 2023 Macy’s NYC windows is Give Love. They featured Tiptoe, the reindeer, for the third year.
Each of the main windows was a different color scheme and had interactive features. They showed Tiptoe having fun with her friends, polar bear and penguin. After pressing the blue box in teh window above, the green presents open and reveal the bear inside.
This adorable pink and red peppermint carousel is moving in the window above,
The blue window lets you take your picture and then you appear in the bubble in the center. You can see Penguin peeking out of one of the ornaments.
The gold room lets you play two of the piano keys (I didn’t see cause and effect, but I did try playing it).
In the red nutcracker window, you’ll see Tiptoe twirling around in a tutu in the center. The nutcracker legs also march – you can see them moving in the right side of the window.
The advent calendar was also interactive – you can get your picture in one of the window dates.
2023 NYC holiday windows: Saks Fifth Avenue
The Saks Fifth Avenue windows this year featured Christian Dior and his first trip to NYC. I didn’t know it was supposed to be about him until I read about it. These were my favorite windows because I love miniatures, and the windows revolved around miniature scenes of NYC. The zodiac sign on the front of Saks also references Dior.
This year the side windows got in on the action. This giant shoe features a snowy NYC brownstone scene.
Another side window featured these vignettes. Not shown above is that this is inside of a street light – it’s inside the glass where the bulb would be. The window had maybe 6-8 different vignettes, with some moving parts. There was a basketball scene with a basketball circling the hoop, for example.
The side windows also showed this version of the Rockefeller Center rink, with women dressed as flowers, and a sleigh (close-up below) going around with perfume in it. That’s supposed to be Christian Dior in that sleigh.
The scene below was lovely, and you can look more closely to find all the lipsticks, like on the bridge. Also look at the big skyscraper lipstick – there are cleaners on there!
The scene below is New Year’s Eve – look for the ball at the top. Christian Dior is supposed to be in the center with a party hat.
Below, we’re now looking at scenes from the front of Saks Fifth Avenue. There were two windows with shirts, one men’s and one women’s (below is the women’s).
The scene below is one of maybe 6-8 suitcases with individual vignettes. There are moving parts on some of these, like in the fashion show suitcases (not pictured here) and some with tiny camera flashes going off.
Below you can see a miniature version of the current front of the Saks building. What’s really fun is to look at the people at the bottom (and the balloons inside).
Here is a close up version of the street scene. We liked the hot dog vendor!
Another shoe window – this one with a woman’s shoe instead of a giant sneaker.
The scene below is a close-up of a building that is also a handbag.
The building below was stunning. I don’t know if it’s fantasy or a real building (a quick internet search makes me think the former – or maybe it’s not in NYC?).
That same internet search makes me think the building below is the Paris flagship.
I can’t say the windows made me want to buy Dior, but I would like to go back and spend more time looking at all the scenes, as they were evocative and well done.
